Touring Pieces

Touring Pieces

We are preparing tours in New Mexico of two short plays by David Mamet: REUNION and THE DUCK VARIATIONS. These productions can be performed on the same bill, or separately. They are both short plays performed by two actors. We are also beginning the process of preparing short pieces that can go into hospital rooms, meetings, school rooms and anywhere people gather. Stay tuned for more information on that work as it becomes available.

THE PLAYS AND THE PLAYWRIGHT:

REUNION introduces the awkward, tender meeting between a father and daughter drawn together by their loneliness after twenty years of separation. Their cautious small talk, filled with evasion and cliché, gradually exposes the terrifying isolation in which they live, and ultimately, their great need for each other. “REUNION is a poem for two voices – and a distinguished and remarkable one.” Julius Novick, Village Voice THE DUCK VARIATIONS depicts a comic conversation taking place between two elderly characters sitting in a park watching ducks. The dialogue begins with the mating habits of water fowl and runs to examine law, friendship and death. The two really know nothing abut ducks. If they did, it would not improve their beautiful fugue on the theme of the possibility of happiness. By their argument and occasional agreement a composite view of ducks and – by extension- the world, begins to emerge. DAVID MAMET Best known as a playwright, Mamet has won a Pulitzer Prize and Tony nominations for GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS and SPEED-THE-PLOW. As a screenwriter, he received Oscar nominations for THE VERDICT and WAG THE DOG. Mamet’s books include: The Old Religion; Five Cities of Refuge: Weekly Reflections on Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy; and Bambi vs. Godzilla.
